The Best Accommodation In St Helens Tasmania

Where Is St Helens, Tasmania

St Helens is the largest coastal town in Tasmania’s northeast and provides an excellent base for exploring the famous Bay of Fires in the north, the verdant forests and mountains in the west and the sensational surf beaches in the south.

St Helens is located 2 hrs east of Launceston and 3 hrs 20 mins north of Hobart.

After 58 km, you’ll turn left (east) onto Esk Hwy (A4) and continue through Avoca, Fingal and St Marys, merging left onto Tasman Hwy 82 km later. • Each place to stay on this list has ample free parking

  • There are no shops in Akaroa and only a small milk bar at the Hillcrest Tourist Park in Stieglitz where you can buy basic goods like milk and some takeaway food

Where To Stay In St Helens

When choosing the best accommodation in St Helens, the first thing to decide is which area you want to stay in. Luckily, St Helens is quite small so wherever you choose, you’ll be close to the action. However, there are some benefits for each region that we will list below.

Main Street of St Helens, Tasmania

St Helens Town Centre

Running parallel to Georges Bay, the town centre of St Helens offers a picturesque location close to the restaurants and cafes lining the streets. Grassy parks border the bay and everything is within walking distance if you pick a place in the centre of town.

St Helens North

If being close to the Bay of Fires is your number one priority, finding accommodation in St Helens’ north is the best option for you. There are many quaint holiday houses situated on or near Georges Bay that boast stunning views looking back at St Helens Point.

Check out our guide on the best places to stay in the Bay of Fires if you’d rather be closer to the world-class beaches.

St Helens South

With the majority of the southern accommodation options perched on a hill overlooking the marina and Georges Bay, St Helens south is a quiet and scenic choice for those wishing for a little peace. But luckily, you don’t have to forego location for peace, south St Helens is within walking distance to town and only a 10-minute drive to the beaches on St Helens Point.

Stieglitz

An original holiday shack destination for Tasmanians, Stieglitz is a cute suburb east of St Helens that still has an alluring shack town vibe. However, the beautiful accommodation options are anything but and the area allows for close proximity to the beaches without straying too far from town.

Akaroa

The last ‘town’ before St Helens Point, Akaroa is the closest place to the beaches and offers a tranquil holiday away from the hustle and bustle of St Helens. In Akaroa, you’ll find stunning houses right on the bay overlooking the Bay of Fires in the north.
