Toggle5 Best Restaurants in Ubud, Bali
While we loved eating at local warungs for the majority of our meals, there are only so many nasi gorengs you can order before a change is needed! So after some serious Google searching, these are the best alternative (and reasonably priced) restaurants in Ubud when you need to spice things up a little.
Kebun Bistro
Location: Jl. Hanoman No.44, Ubud
Price: $$
Best For: Mediterranean cuisine, pasta, tapas
Favourite meal: Lamb ragu pappardelle
As soon as you set foot in Kebun Bistro, you’ll feel as if you’ve been whisked away to the Mediterranean seaside. The provencal-style bistro is famous for its delicious pastas and irresistible tapas and we can confirm that their homemade pastas are among the best we’ve ever tasted – which speaks volumes coming from pasta enthusiasts!
The Kebun Bistro was not only our favourite dining experience in Ubud, but throughout our entire two-month stay in Bali. We loved everything from the beautiful decor and lively atmosphere to the exquisite food and friendly service.
We started with the bruschetta trio and the albondigas (Spanish meatballs), followed by the lamb ragu pappardelle and the wild mushroom ravioli. Although the meals are a bit pricier, ranging from 60K to 150K, the delicious food justified the slightly higher cost.
Rayjin
Location: Jl. Hanoman No.10Y, Ubud
Price: $$$
Best For: Japanese tapas, delicious cocktails
Favourite meal: Noritacos
If you’re in the mood to treat yourself to a delicious Japanese meal in a beautiful and vibrant environment, then you must check out Rayjin. Located near the Monkey Forest, we stumbled across this restaurant while ambling down the street and were instantly lured in by its inviting atmosphere.
Rayjin is a fusion restaurant combining Japanese and Western cuisines, offering a vibrant ambience with bar-style seating around a teppanyaki counter. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Rayjin, where we sat sipping delicious signature cocktails while watching the skilled chefs prepare our meals.
Every dish we tasted was beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. We shared various sushi rolls, noritacos (sushi tacos), salmon skin and tuna tataki. Some of these dishes may not be available when you visit as their menu is constantly changing to accommodate fresh ideas.
Rayjin was the most expensive restaurant in Ubud that we dined at, with meals priced between 60K and 200K – with some signature dishes priced higher. But even so, we paid under $100 AUD for three cocktails, four main meals and a dessert!
Zest
Location: Jl. Penestanan No.7, Sayan
Price: $$
Best For: Vegan, healthy and innovative dishes
Favourite meal: Big breakfast salad stack
Zest is your go-to when you want wholesome, healthy vegan food in a peaceful and cosy atmosphere. As soon as you step inside, you’re enveloped by lush gardens, lovely piano sounds and comfortable seating. We visited for brunch, which was perfect because they may just have the best coffee in Ubud!!
While you can certainly find cheaper brekkie spots, most dishes are under 100K and offered in hearty portions. We ordered the big breakfast salad stack and the avocado toast, which were both delicious. But as we mentioned, the stand out was the frappuccino and espresso.
Chai Of The Tiger
Location: Jl. Bisma No.49, Ubud
Price: $$
Best For: Modern Indian street food and tapas
Favourite meal: Pani puri
Unless you’ve visited India or nearby countries, there’s a strong chance that you have yet to experience chaat – Indian street food. We happened upon Chai of the Tiger while once again wandering the streets and immediately stopped to inspect the cause of the delicious aromas wafting onto the street.
Chai of the Tiger is a modern-style Indian restaurant that focuses on traditional street food – known as chaat – as well as a few staple dishes like butter chicken and dahl. Everything they brought out looked incredible, we ordered the pani puri, padpi chaat and samosas – all of which were delicious!
But perhaps our favourite meal was the ice ice puri dessert, you don’t even need to know what it is – just order it, you won’t regret it!
As always with tapas, you can end up spending more than expected. But with most dishes ranging from 40K to 80K, you can enjoy quite a spread!
Dumbo
Location: Jl. Raya Sanggingan, Kedewatan
Price: $$$
Best For: Pizza, vegetarian
Favourite meal: Pinocchio pizza
We don’t know about you, but we can’t go long before the craving for mouth-watering woodfire pizza takes over! But luckily, this can be easily satiated by the innovative wood-fired pizzas at Dumbo’s.
Dumbo’s is a vegetarian Italian restaurant that specialises in wood-fired pizzas and homemade pasta. Before you screw your nose up at the fact that you won’t be dining on traditional salami or prosciutto pizzas, just give it a try – your taste buds won’t be disappointed!
On top of incredibly delicious food, Dumbo’s also offers suggestions on wine pairings and shakes up some seriously funky cocktails!
Final Thoughts
We spent most of our time eating at the incredible and budget-friendly warungs in Ubud, but you’ve gotta branch out occasionally and these were our all-time favourite splurges! Who would have thought that you could find some of the best Italian and Japanese food ever in Bali!?
We hope that you enjoy our list of delicious and vibrant restaurants as much as we did. If you’ve got a favourite we haven’t mentioned here, please feel free to let us know about it in the comments below.
Happy Travelling 🙂
